September 30—October 3: Pinehurst Resort & Country Club

Bob Cherry became the fifth player in as many years to have his name engraved on the Francis O. Tayloe Trophy by winning the seventeenth annual North Carolina State Championship. Playing at what is now his home club, Cherry advanced from block play as the #2 seed in the draw-and-process playoffs, where he won both sides of the bracket to win the title in style.

Bob Whitmore, another recent addition to the Pinehurst membership roll, won the First Flight. In the final match he beat Andy Williamson, last year’s Second Flight champion. Carol Cherry won the Second Flight, and newcomer Tommy Harrington won the Third Flight.

This croquet season it has been said by many players, “I’m not sure what it is about Bob Cherry, but he’s not who I would choose to play in a final.” In addition to winning the 2004 USCA International Rules Championship, Cherry has won several other tournaments this year and North Carolina is proud to crown him champion.
