The sixteenth annual North Carolina Club Teams Championship is underway in the beautiful high-mountain setting of Linville. Six clubs have entered a total of sixty-two players in the four-day event. (One of those clubs, High Country, is a confederation of the three Linville-area clubs.)

For most players the first two days are just a warm-up — all pairs advance to the playoffs in First, Second, and Third flights. In Championship flight, the goal for the block is to avoid the cellar — eight of the nine pairs will advance.

In Third Flight the High Country pairs of Butch Noe — John Lancaster, and Myron Blackmer — Cary Williams, are undefeated on 3/3. This is the first tournament for all four players.

Marc “Soup” Campbell and Jerry Tysinger of Meadows Mallet Club lead Second Flight on 3/3. This is not their first tournament.

In First Flight, the High Country duo of Bill Hartmann and Mark Kaylor lead on 3/3.

In Championship Flight, David Maloof — Steve Johnston (High Country) powered through four strong wins today, while Danny Huneycutt — Tommy Harrington (Meadows) were a little scrappier while going 3/3.

The First Flight block finishes tomorrow. The playoff draw will be posted in the day 2 report tomorrow evening. If you don’t know otherwise, show up at Linville Ridge ready to play the 8:30 round.
