NC players win top Regional titles

North Carolina players Danny Huneycutt and Bill and Billie Jean Berne won the Championship Flight events at the 2005 USCA Southeast Regional Championships, held on and around Hilton Head Island from April 27–May 1. On the final day at the Dataw Island Croquet Club, Huneycutt won the singles final 26–4 over Dataw local Bill Bopp. Earlier, the Bernes had beaten Bopp and partner Keith Nelon 13–5 in the doubles final.

That NC players would win both titles is none too surprising, given that five of the six players in the flight were from NC. This was far from the case in the other flights, where just five NC players were among the thirty-eight players in the First, Second, and Third flights. All of the top titles in those flights were won by Hilton Head–area players.

The Bernes won their third Regional doubles title with canny and careful play on a lawn that was in very good condition but with some challenging boundaries. The first roquet did not occur until about twenty-five minutes into the game, as both sides made positional plays in an effort to coax opponents into an error. Once the game began in earnest it was Nelon and Bopp with the early errors, allowing the Bernes to control the deadness game and to steadily build a lead, one or two hoops at a time.

The singles final was all Huneycutt. Bopp remained strangely passive throughout a game in which Huneycutt made a variety of crowd-pleasing plays. The game began with some out-play, which Huneycutt controlled and then ended with spectacular shots through the first hoop with each of his balls. Once all balls were in the game, Huneycutt had nearly all of the play. Bopp did twice attempt to rush out and score #2, but failed both times. Despite a number of errors by Huneycutt, Bopp never attempted any other plays. He even declined some fairly safe shots at Huneycutt’s leaves, always choosing to corner instead. This is Huneycutt’s first Regional singles title.
