Jim Seward of the Black Mountain Croquet Club (Black Mountain, NC) won First Flight Doubles at the USCA National Championships, held November 6–12 in Rancho Mirage, California. He and partner Rick Alderson (Eugene, OR) had the best record in qualifying play to earn the top playoff seeding. They were then undefeated through the playoffs, winning 20-15 in the final match against Eileen Soo (Chapel Hill, NC) and Anne Coco (Houston, TX).

Seward was also the top seed after singles qualifying play. He finished third in singles.

On receiving his trophy for wining the doubles, Seward paid an emotional tribute to Jim Kent, who passed away during the week of the tournament. Seward remembered Kent as a good friend and a previous winner of the same event.
